    This 52 page download has three different instructional components:

    This sections begins with 20 researchable trivia questions about famous, not-so-famous, and infamous people from Oklahoma, the story’s setting. Next map activities help students pin-point the geographical location of the Ozarks. The final section is a series of prompts and questions about dogs and their relationship with humans. Two bulletin board ideas are also included.

    6 short (1-2 pages) articles help spark interest and give students a little extra information about some of the places and things they will encounter in reading.
    Each one comes with its own set of CCSS/Standards-based questions.

    The vocabulary portion begins with an alphabetized list of all the words chosen for study along with their page numbers. Next the words are grouped into three sets in book order with definitions and page numbers. These pages can be held strictly for teacher reference and convenience or shared with students as they complete the three Dictionary Digs activities. Two word usage activities completes the word study.
    This component also includes two figurative language worksheets. Selected samples of figures of speech (simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, alliteration, and idiom) used by the author are taken from the text and presented to the student for study as multiple choice questions with 4 possible answers.

    The Think, Write, Create section offers a series of open-ended activities based on the higher level thinking skills of Bloom’s Taxonomy and specific CCSS skills. The items are organized as a section of chapter-by-chapter activities and a second group of whole-book, post-reading challenges. Difficulty levels are varied to accommodate the needs of individual students including the gifted. Elements of literature and vocabulary building are targeted in some of these activities. Where applicable, targeted CCSS skills are listed at the end of the prompts.

    Where the Red Fern Grows Whole Book Tests

    This teaching resource for Wilson Rawls’s classic novel has two different types of whole book tests.

    The 50-question multiple choice test (4 possible answers) is strictly fact-based. Students must have full knowledge of the story’s plot, events, and characters in order to do well on this quiz.

    The 20-question CCSS/Standards-Based test The 20 question test requires students to engage in higher-level thinking skills and apply their knowledge of story facts. This quiz ends with an analytical, interpretive writing prompt.
